Guillermo del Toro would have already seen it Avatar: The Waterway and his initial mixed opinion of the film has us wanting to see it more than ever.
When it comes to taking stock of 2022, it’s a safe bet that at the top of the list of directors who have marked it, we’ll find the names of Guillermo del Toro and James Cameron. The former has certainly been hit hard several times this year with its superior Nightmare Alleyhis earthly series, The cabinet of curiositiesand has in store for us for December Pinocchio. But it’s clear that it’s Cameron who will shed the most ink (and has shed a lot of ink already) with this winter’s phenomenon: Avatar: The Waterway.
This highly anticipated sequel to the landmark 2009 blockbuster is coming out very soon, and so far we’ve commented on its arrival. Excitement and suspicion share the spectators, while James Cameron risks everything with his own avatar2. The question remains whether the film will live up to the impressive expectations of the mainstream and be able to deliver a box office performance like its predecessor. A challenge that is not as easy as one might imagine, as the consumption pattern of spectators has changed a lot in thirteen years and a pandemic later. However, in terms of sheer movie quality, Guillermo del Toro seems to have seen it before and his assessment of it is more than positive.
James Cameron and Guillermo del Toro are old friends and their friendship is known to be unwavering. The two men have known each other since 1993 and immediately found the hooks in their common passion. As reported by Uproxx (in 2014), their unmistakable brotherhood would have been sealed since 1997, when Cameron agreed to pay a ransom for Guillermo del Toro’s father to kidnappers, amounting to a million dollars. The director of Titanic thus obtained the freedom of father Del Toro after three days, thanks to negotiators, paid at the expense of the creator of Terminator.
Since then, the two men praise each other and the director of Pan’s labyrinth was often present in his friend’s editing rooms and learned a lot from him and new 3D technologies. It’s no surprise that del Toro has already seen the whole thingavatar2 and his (brief) critique of the film seems all the more legitimate. It was on Twitter that he published it, following a message from producer Jon Landau announcing the end of mixingavatar2.
A staggering performance – AVATAR TWOW is packed with majestic vistas and emotions on an epic, epic scale. A master at the height of his powers… https://t.co/tG6I16JlhM
— Guillermo del Toro (@RealGDT) November 24, 2022
“An awe-inspiring feat – Avatar: The Way of the Water is filled with majestic sights and emotions on a truly epic scale. A master at the top of his game.“
The verdict therefore fell into the hands of the Mexican filmmaker: avatar2 perhaps a new masterpiece for James Cameron. Del Toro always gives his sincere cinephile opinion on various projects, especially on social media. For example, he spoke highly of Bardo, false chronicle of some truths, the next film from Alejandro González Iñárritu and recently fiercely defended Martin Scorsese. Nothing can stop the director’s enthusiasm when it comes to artists he holds in high esteem.
This is still the case here, even if it is natural this opinion should be taken with a grain of salt given the shared history of the two filmmakers. Still, these few dithyrambic words make our mouths water, especially since we are only a few weeks away from discovering the feature film in the cinema and in the best conditions. Avatar: The Waterway will be released in our cinemas in France on December 14and we can’t wait to get there.
